Larry, an intrepid traveler, has been taking travel pictures since he got his first Brownie Hawkeye, "Flash". He is skilled at framing interesting sights and local color, and I depend on Larry's perspective. His photo collection reflects 40 plus years of our adventurous married life. We have boxes full of negatives, 4x6 prints, a phone with countless gigs of snapshots with even more in that diffuse space referred to as, "the cloud".</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Now about me. <i>I am, therefore I travel</i>. In college I spent a semester at sea. A few years later I married an airline pilot. I have literally circumnavigated the world. My travel photos~ nondescript.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">About ten years ago, I discovered the fun of casual blogging. It was only the pursuit of quality blog posts that led me to an interest in more serious photo skills. Our only child, an amazing grown-up guy, gifted me a Canon DSLR camera, and I was hooked! I have endeavored since to learn not only the mechanics, but the art of seeing the world through the camera’s lens. After probably a year spent immersed in online photography classes and random field practice, I found my niche; a mode that is different from say, a travel writer. My photos are highly stylized. I am drawn to oft overlooked objects in unpredictable places. Rarely do my photos offer the viewer an armchair travel pictorial of an easily identifiable location.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">My goal as a photographer is to creatively capture what many would consider unremarkable objects; and to elicit an emotional response. As Rod Stewart famously sang, "Every picture tells a story, don't it".</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">I refer to my work as, <i>art in the ordinary</i>. Most of my work reflects my uncluttered approach to designing a shot, and a minimal amount of post processing (commonly referred to as "photo-shopping"). I am drawn to very large format prints, such as 20x30 enlargements, and our walls are a testament to that. My delight is to provide an upclose and personal experience with my prints, and I often refer to my work humorously as, <i>in your face photography.</i></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">You may love my style, or you may dismiss it as "an acquired taste". Regardless, I'm glad you found your way to my website. Take a few minutes and have a look. If one of my images resonates with you, please let me know.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"> </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">*You will find my photography under the categories, <i>Travel</i> and <i>Shop Remnant. </i> <br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; For those of you unfamiliar with 60's music, this is an uptempo melody with lyrics describing a young Chuck Berry on a seemingly random drive-about with his date, with no real destination in mind. The date goes humorously awry when he decides to stop and he can't get his seatbelt unfastened.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><p></p><p>I often think of this song when I'm longing for a <i>get out and go</i>~ a day trip with no restrictions (except for seatbelts).</p><p><br /></p><p>Although the notion of roaming around with no particular stops in mind sounds fun, that kind of drive rarely meets my expectations. In all actuality, most successful excursions require a modicum of preplanning. And just as an aside, most men do not do at all well with purposeless ambling, so keep that in mind too.</p><p><br /></p><p>Today I'm sharing some pictures of a recent outing I planned for my good friend's birthday, and a few tips for crafting a successful day-journey.</p><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_KWXJuP74pJBiAOp4L0tewpJKo7CKA4c1-lVU_rmxUiouSfzUiJZTJpOp48EYCt23YnKuLNi3RL6pX_coEZuSeJslYPa9665BQVqF-hqNMwD-vTPE2m_n2S67PWsJbRwvSgJZLhKTx-I/s2048/53D3081A-88E2-4FEE-9036-52EDC77C6A72_1_100_o.jpeg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1365" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_KWXJuP74pJBiAOp4L0tewpJKo7CKA4c1-lVU_rmxUiouSfzUiJZTJpOp48EYCt23YnKuLNi3RL6pX_coEZuSeJslYPa9665BQVqF-hqNMwD-vTPE2m_n2S67PWsJbRwvSgJZLhKTx-I/w426-h640/53D3081A-88E2-4FEE-9036-52EDC77C6A72_1_100_o.jpeg" width="426" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><ol><li style="text-align: left;">Consider having a theme for your outing. My friend loves farming, flowers and local food. These categories helped me figure out our stops. I spent a lot of time on the internet researching farms and farm stands, flower carts and handcrafted food venues. I checked days and hours carefully.</li><li style="text-align: left;">Every good drive trip starts with great coffee. <i>But first coffee</i>~ that's our motto.</li><li style="text-align: left;">Take a picture at every stop. Good memories need to be preserved.</li><li style="text-align: left;">Figure out in advance where you plan to have a meal, and try not to arrive during the busiest time.</li><li style="text-align: left;">Carry cash. In addition, there is so much great local food to be experienced. And as if these things aren't enough to lure visitors, our eastern county boundary stops just shy of North Cascades National Park. Wow! </div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">I hope I've inspired you to plan an outing. From time to time we all need that breath of fresh air that only a little time away from life's responsibilities can provide. </div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">Where will you go?</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">~<i>Dana</i></div></div><br /><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div></div><br /><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><div><br /></div></div>Dana Bishophttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00633408642283118508noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6329019972111597413.post-57776988573131826122020-10-08T18:31:00.010-07:002022-01-17T08:31:47.454-08:005 Reasons To Travel In Fall<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: x-large;">Experience Fall!</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEh0O5roWAA9hmBuEIPgj0VKloulPa0gNI_qgPDdM8Ks77k12Vv7Qo891WKh5sb57DfmDQlUV42RjoU2Q0XYm7XHOPMnFP_4ZhxpWKV1HYT1Di_UUeERh8VE1siVVFlIIB1ls_mOp2OWSGDapq4jH2RhebgiHEPiZnPKGMps55H16L9JuDssJiFaVk-K=s6000" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4000" data-original-width="6000" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEh0O5roWAA9hmBuEIPgj0VKloulPa0gNI_qgPDdM8Ks77k12Vv7Qo891WKh5sb57DfmDQlUV42RjoU2Q0XYm7XHOPMnFP_4ZhxpWKV1HYT1Di_UUeERh8VE1siVVFlIIB1ls_mOp2OWSGDapq4jH2RhebgiHEPiZnPKGMps55H16L9JuDssJiFaVk-K=w640-h426" width="640" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Hello friends! I have been working very hard on the space just inside our front door, and because I am forever naming my favorite spaces in our home, I would like to welcome you to <span class="x-el x-el-span c2-2j c2-2k c2-6f c2-2e c2-2s c2-6g c2-6h c2-3 x-d-ux" color="inherit" style="box-sizing: inherit; font-size: inherit; font-style: italic; letter-spacing: inherit; line-height: inherit; text-transform: inherit;">Cozy Nook</span>. Cozy Nook measures roughly 6 feet x 7.5 feet, and is flooded with light on sunny days from dawn until dusk.</span></span></p><p style="box-sizing: inherit; margin: 0px;"><span style="box-sizing: inherit;"><span style="font-family: times;">As the saying goes, you only get one chance to make a first impression, and our entryway is obviously the first room friends see when they step inside. So my thinking is, <span class="x-el x-el-span c2-2j c2-2k c2-6f c2-2e c2-2s c2-6g c2-6h c2-3 x-d-ux" color="inherit" style="box-sizing: inherit; font-size: inherit; font-style: italic; letter-spacing: inherit; line-height: inherit; text-transform: inherit;">it better be good</span>.</span></span></p><p style="box-sizing: inherit; margin: 0px;"><span style="box-sizing: inherit;"><span style="font-family: times;"><br /></span></span></p><p style="box-sizing: inherit; margin: 0px;"><span style="box-sizing: inherit;"><span style="font-family: times;">There are many names given to an entry space~ entry hall, entryway, entrance way, foyer, and sometimes mudroom~ and maybe you can think of more. From my experience I've determined that what we call our entryway varies depending upon where we live. For example, when I was growing up in Los Angeles we called it the entry hall, but after I was married and we moved to St. Louis, Missouri, we learned quickly that it was commonly referred to as the 'fo-yer' (by no means the French pronunciation). Here in Northwest Washington it's the entryway or (aptly named) mudroom. What do you call your front door space? </span></span></p><p style="box-sizing: inherit; margin: 0px;"><span style="box-sizing: inherit;"><span style="font-family: times;"><br /></span></span></p><p style="box-sizing: inherit; margin: 0px;"><span style="box-sizing: inherit;"><span style="font-family: times;">Cozy Nook is actually a tiny room that was added to the original house by the couple who lived here before us. This couple made many modifications to the original footprint, and everything they did was done poorly and with salvaged, mismatched materials. However, I am glad they added this bit of space, albeit shabbily, because I'm not sure we would have it now, given how much other rehabbing we've been compelled to do. I really do like having this snippet of finished space. It's a happy place.</span></span></p><p style="box-sizing: inherit; margin: 0px;"><span style="box-sizing: inherit;"><span style="font-family: times;">Truly we bought the house for the view. We were so smitten with the water panorama, the large yard and the reasonable price, that we hardly noticed anything else. And actually in thinking back, many of the structural defects were hidden behind walls and floors so we wouldn't have discovered them anyway, even with the building inspector. We have undone and rebuilt so many unattractive and unsafe elements, that at times we have wondered if we should have just torn the house down and built new.</span></span></p><p style="box-sizing: inherit; margin: 0px;"><span style="box-sizing: inherit;"><span style="font-family: times;"><br /></span></span></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg19ZR5V5Chg2FUX0pu3DRURhslFTk-6WT-zRaQx0EP_-6GNELphNkkYXeQUH0wnWRHD4_4Jyy6bzmQQvSgMaVuembNL6Vguco2WVDdhlm-nPAGTLp2ZHqiY-LFa8RU6F1Ei0GjKKEjIHs/s1280/rs%253Dw-1280.jpeg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="854" data-original-width="1280" height="429" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg19ZR5V5Chg2FUX0pu3DRURhslFTk-6WT-zRaQx0EP_-6GNELphNkkYXeQUH0wnWRHD4_4Jyy6bzmQQvSgMaVuembNL6Vguco2WVDdhlm-nPAGTLp2ZHqiY-LFa8RU6F1Ei0GjKKEjIHs/w640-h429/rs%253Dw-1280.jpeg" width="640" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><b>Our beloved water view.</b></div><div><br /></div><div><p style="box-sizing: inherit; caret-color: rgb(94, 94, 94); color: #5e5e5e; font-size: 14px; margin: 0px;"><span style="box-sizing: inherit;"><span style="font-family: times;">We have upgraded Cozy Nook in stages, beginning with a tile floor, later new windows, beadboard, and recently a lovely wood front door. (The blind is almost always up or open; only closed now for the photos.) This is a very special place to collect my thoughts, plan my day, and count my many blessings. I recently painted and distressed an old desk that I found at a local thrift store. I am by no means great at painting furniture but am surprisingly pleased with my efforts this time. The desk fits perfectly here. Its dimensions are just right and the new white paint brightens the room even on the gloomiest day.</span></span></p><p style="box-sizing: inherit; margin: 0px;"><span style="font-family: times;"><span style="box-sizing: inherit;"></span></span></p><div><p style="box-sizing: inherit; caret-color: rgb(94, 94, 94); color: #5e5e5e; font-size: 14px; margin: 0px;"><span style="box-sizing: inherit;"><span style="font-family: times;">The desk chair is used not only by me but by Larry. Until I started dating Larry in 1979, I had never been to a second-hand store of any kind. Shopping pre-owned was not part of my family's culture. </span></p><p style="box-sizing: inherit; caret-color: rgb(94, 94, 94); color: #5e5e5e; margin: 0px;"><span style="box-sizing: inherit;"><span style="font-family: times;">Try to picture this~ When I met Larry I was 24 and he was 40; a handsome, longterm bachelor, flying for one of the world's premier international airlines, and living in a cool condo three blocks from the sand in Manhattan Beach, California. </span></span></p><p style="box-sizing: inherit; caret-color: rgb(94, 94, 94); color: #5e5e5e; margin: 0px;"><span style="box-sizing: inherit;"><span style="font-family: times;"><br /></span></span></p><p style="box-sizing: inherit; caret-color: rgb(94, 94, 94); color: #5e5e5e; margin: 0px;"><span style="box-sizing: inherit;"><span style="font-family: times;">On one of our first dates Larry invited me to go shopping for some new shirts.<span class="x-el x-el-span c2-2j c2-2k c2-6f c2-2e c2-6g c2-3c c2-3 x-d-ux" color="inherit" style="box-sizing: inherit; font-weight: 700; letter-spacing: inherit; line-height: inherit; text-transform: inherit;"> New</span> shirts. I immediately assumed oxford cloth, button down, monogrammed cuff. One in every color, right? Imagine my shock when Larry's haberdasher of choice was a Salvation Army thrift store. I kid you not. If I hadn't been so head-over-heels for Larry, I'm certain that would have been our last date.</span></span></p><p style="box-sizing: inherit; caret-color: rgb(94, 94, 94); color: #5e5e5e; margin: 0px;"><span style="box-sizing: inherit;"><span style="font-family: times;"><br /></span></span></p><p style="box-sizing: inherit; caret-color: rgb(94, 94, 94); color: #5e5e5e; margin: 0px;"><span style="box-sizing: inherit;"><span style="font-family: times;">Over the years we've both changed; we've met in the middle.
